Congratulations to Jamie Rogers who recently won the PFI Club Championship in the 11-15 age group category. The PFI Club Championship is the second highest league in the UK for Go-Karting and Jamie finished first out of twenty-three entries. Jamie competed in every round and finished on the podium in the majority of races. Such consistent performances saw Jamie win the league outright. On Thursday, 1st December Chizute Ogbedeh was invited to a prestigious awards evening held at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Queen Mary, University of London. Dr Airey, Head Teacher, was amongst the invited guests privileged to hear Dr David Bainbridge from Cambridge University introduce the essay competition he had judged on behalf of the World Class Schools Organisation. Year 8 had a fabulous trip to the famous science centre and observatory. 8Y had glorious weather but 8X had to endure rather more inhospitable rain and wind. The Year 8 pupils took on a range of hands-on activities testing reaction time, modelling tornadoes and the vacuum chair. Joelle Taylor’s Visit

On Wednesday 9th December, renowned poet, spoken word artist, playwright and novelist, Joelle Taylor, came to perform and run a poetry workshop at Darrick Wood School. Joelle Taylor is a former UK slam champion and founder and artistic director of the Poetry Society’s national solo youth slam SLAMbassadors UK. She has produced four plays for theatre as well as several texts on performance practice. What’s more, her poetry was on last year’s syllabus for the English Language GCSE (OCR board)….

Year 9 Speaks Out!

On Monday 17th October, 29 members of Year 9 took part in the Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge workshop. Every year Darrick Wood School participates in the scheme, which aims to instil in pupils the skills, confidence and desire to speak in public through workshops run by the Speakers Trust and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Football Success for Year 9 Pupils

Reece McLellan (9XB) and Drew Rowley (9XL) were chosen in the Summer by the Deaf Football Association to complete trials. Darrick Wood School has received news that both pupils passed these trials and are now part of the London Region Talent Centre. This is the pathway towards joining the England Deaf Football team in the future. They will also have opportunities to play other regions in this country, other countries abroad and in the Olympics. Darrick Wood School was fortunate to have the opportunity to host a visit from the US ambassador to the UK, Mr Matthew Barzun, on September 26th. The ambassador’s motorcade swept up the school drive and out stepped the United State’s top diplomat in the UK accompanied by a phalanx of burly security men that did look like they meant business.
