This week Assemblies started with a fantastic performance by two talented Year 10 students, Anthony and Alex, who entertained with an extract from their play written and recorded for DWS Audio. This was a mixture of pre-recorded and live action and was a great way to start the day. The play centres on Brighton in 1969 and the activities of friends who go in search of a missing teenager from London. To hear more, the audience were encouraged to listen…

Assembly round-upLast week’s assemblies started with a performance from students from our Deaf centre. Their version of ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman was truly amazing. Thank you to Maryam, Evie-May, Asma and Stanley. The assembly’s theme was Money Matters. Students were given a quick history of money and how its value changes over time. They then considered the evidence of how qualifications lead to better access to higher paid employment and finally, we evaluated our own personal attitude…

This week Assemblies started with a performance from the Jazz Band. They were brilliant. We then focused on this week’s theme of People are Different. This theme allowed everyone to consider how when we look at things (e.g. a painting) people can notice different things, even though they are looking at the same thing. We also spoke about the whole world coming together for the Olympics and Paralympics this summer and how the different sports required different skills. We concluded…

This week Assemblies this week started with a presentation by Isabella, Isobel, Rosalind, Hannah and Lizzie who all went on the recent Netball Tour. They shared their review of the Tour and encouraged others to go on the Tour next year.  They all spoke with clarity and were excellent ambassadors for school sport. As mentioned in previous bulletins, we encourage students to participate in many ways in assemblies either through performance or through a presentation. Last week’s singing by Piper,…

This week Assemblies in this first week of the summer term were themed around life being a journey. Life can be more enriching and enjoyable when we challenge ourselves do different things. We looked at the extreme challenges overcome by Jasmin Paris (first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons in USA) and Russ Cook, who recently completed a run from the south of Africa to the north (10,000miles!). These were very inspiring, but our adventures through life do not need…

This week Assemblies this week have focused on what it means to be a neighbour and in particular a good neighbour. Students also reflected on how technology is changing what we mean by neighbour and bringing people closer together virtually. The example was shared of how the Duolingo app is being used by millions of people worldwide to learn languages and how, by learning another language, we can then develop closer links with others that we might not otherwise have…

End of autumn term As we reach the end of this first term we have been looking back over the term and reflecting on our students’ many successes and achievements. Achievement assemblies have been held for all year groups apart from Year 13 (currently completing mock examinations). Our assemblies each began with a Christmas themed performance by our KS3 Drama group, facilitated by our Sixth Form drama students. They did incredibly well performing from the stage in front of all…

This week With Year 11 starting their mock examinations, as is usual at this time of year, our main assembly moved to an alternative rota for Years 7-10. This week’s theme focused on Peace. This follows on from our Remembrance assemblies a fortnight ago. The assemblies began with cast members from our Wizard of Oz school production speaking about their experience in the show, followed by a recording and photo montage from the production. We may now have Over the…

This week We have held Remembrance assemblies all week with all year groups.  These included speeches from two of our fabulous History Ambassadors who talked about the origins of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and the famous poem, “In Flanders Fields”, by John McCrae. At the end of assembly we all stood, observed the Last Post (played by one of our musicians) and held a minute’s silence. As usual, no doubt many of our students will also be…
