This week This week’s assemblies began with Vlad sharing his inspirational story of how he came to the UK showing great courage and resilience at the time, qualities he then utilised hugely in helping those of us fortunate not to have had to leave their home to have greater understanding of the impact this can have on a young person. It was an emotional listen but we all felt better informed and able to fully understand why we were marking…

This week Assemblies in this first week of the summer term were themed around life being a journey. Life can be more enriching and enjoyable when we challenge ourselves do different things. We looked at the extreme challenges overcome by Jasmin Paris (first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons in USA) and Russ Cook, who recently completed a run from the south of Africa to the north (10,000miles!). These were very inspiring, but our adventures through life do not need…

This week This week we celebrated British Science Week. The theme this year is smashing stereotypes. Science is such a varied sector and much more than the societal stereotype of someone in a lab coat and goggles, swirling a conical flask. In the main school assembly we highlighted the importance of science for every one of us. To complement this, students were encouraged to read some of the ‘smashing stereotypes’ stories here: Smashing Stereotypes: The profiles – British Science Week….

Assemblies Last week we were treated to a wonderful performance by Khloe on the piano. This week, Culture Week assemblies were launched by a fantastic performance of the Samba Club, led by Head of Music, Mr Rees. Mr Guest, Head of History and Politics, was then joined by students from the EDI Society to explain the reasons why the students had asked for a Culture Week. Events through the week were promoted with a view that all students would appreciate…

Welcome back We hope everyone had an enjoyable half-term break. Year 11 came back to face their pre-public examinations in many of their subjects, their final mocks before their GCSE this summer. They have worked hard and will appreciate a break this weekend. As we move into the second half of this term, there is a buzz about school with so much going on as illustrated in the items in this week’s bulletin. There has been a big increase in…

Latest news Last week’s assemblies started with a fascinating account from Marcus and Shubhan of the Year 11 trip before Christmas to Cologne, Germany. The long journey was more than made up for by what Cologne had to offer and they ensured we all wished we had had the chance to go. In an assembly led predominantly by students, we then heard from some of our amazing eco representatives across all year groups – Aerin, Chelsea, Shreya, Scott, Shubhan, Olivia,…

This week Assemblies this week have focused on what it means to be a neighbour and in particular a good neighbour. Students also reflected on how technology is changing what we mean by neighbour and bringing people closer together virtually. The example was shared of how the Duolingo app is being used by millions of people worldwide to learn languages and how, by learning another language, we can then develop closer links with others that we might not otherwise have…

This week As we enter December and start to look forward to Christmas, as if on cue, the weather turned frosty this week and the site team were busy with the salt spreader around the grounds. Inside, we were grateful our heating system is working well (most of the time!) and were uplifted in assemblies by some brilliant playing by Guillermo playing a guitar solo piece. Following his performance we were encouraged to think about light, how it can also…

Autumn term – reflections on the term so far We started this year with assemblies that emphasised the special community that exists in a school and our school in particular. We encouraged students to support each other to live by our values of Respect, Responsibility and Honesty. There have been so many examples of this so far this year, from charity fund raising (e.g. Jeans for Genes Day), to the Year 7 team building days, our fantastic Open Evening guides…

This week Assemblies this week have been themed around Black History Month. The assembly was prepared and led by students and Mr Guest, Head of History and Politics. It started with a recording of students performing Benjamin Zephaniah’s Melting Pot, acted out in one of our Food Tech classrooms.
