Readathon 2025 Update

Readathon 2025 Update

Thank you to everyone who supported our Year 7, 8 and 9 students with sponsorship money and encouragement to read. We made an amazing £1,139 for the charity Read for Good which provides storytellers and books for children in hospital. Students spent time over the Readathon fortnight listening to teachers in the School reading books aloud, reading in Form or in the Reading Realm. It’s been proven that children who read for pleasure are more likely to be successful and…

Darrick Wood featured in Poetry By Heart’s newsletter

Darrick Wood featured in Poetry By Heart’s newsletter

Our English Department manages the School’s entries into the annual Poetry By Heart (PBH) National Competition which has featured in prior newsletters. The most recent PBH newsletter featured our Year 7 Portable Paradise Project, which tasked students with creating their own paradise in physical, not just poetic, form in response to a poem in our anthology. You can ‘jump to’ the Ideas and Inspiration section of the newsletter where you will find Darrick Wood featured. You can then click through…

Sixth Form Reading Mentors

Sixth Form Reading Mentors

Our fantastic Sixth Form Reading volunteers have started reading with Year 7 students this week. They had a training session with Mrs Millar last week – thinking about how reading works (it’s complicated!) and how to share their own love and enthusiasm for reading. Selected Year 7 students will have a 1:1 reading session in the Reading Realm, supervised by our Reading Coordinator Ms Jacobs over the year. We have got off to a fantastic start with 7XB and 7XF….

This week Assemblies this week started with a presentation by Isabella, Isobel, Rosalind, Hannah and Lizzie who all went on the recent Netball Tour. They shared their review of the Tour and encouraged others to go on the Tour next year.  They all spoke with clarity and were excellent ambassadors for school sport. As mentioned in previous bulletins, we encourage students to participate in many ways in assemblies either through performance or through a presentation. Last week’s singing by Piper,…

Extra-curricular sport is going from strength to strength at Darrick Wood School and members of the Sports Council have been responsible, with staff, in raising its profile and promoting the benefits of being involved in school sport. Assemblies all week focused on books and reading, culminating in Thursday’s World Book Day….

Latest news Last week’s assemblies started with a fascinating account from Marcus and Shubhan of the Year 11 trip before Christmas to Cologne, Germany. The long journey was more than made up for by what Cologne had to offer and they ensured we all wished we had had the chance to go. In an assembly led predominantly by students, we then heard from some of our amazing eco representatives across all year groups – Aerin, Chelsea, Shreya, Scott, Shubhan, Olivia,…
