Chemistry and the Royal Society at Darrick Wood School

Chemistry students at Darrick Wood School Orpington are the proud recipients of extra resources to support their study of A Level Chemistry thanks to a generous grant from The Royal Society of Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry have been incredibly supportive and the additional resources they have provided will enable students, many of whom harbour ambitions to become chemical engineers, biochemists and medical doctors, to work more independently and enhance their understanding of Chemistry.

Gifted and Talented visit Greenwich University

Nine Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from Darrick Wood School attended the Bromley Gifted and Talented Science and Technology day at the University of Greenwich. Working in pairs as part of teams of four with pupils from schools throughout the Borough the pupils took on a set of challenges.  These included E-fit profiling, programming robots, dragster races and a medical challenge. Salters’ Chemistry Festival

Congratulation to our Y8 scientists, who did brilliantly in the annual Salters’ Chemistry Festival.  Our budding young chemists were up against some stiff competition from 25 other schools from in and around London (a mixture of independent, grammar, academy and comprehensive schools). There were two competitions held throughout the day.  Our pupils did so well that they were placed 1st in the second challenge titled “The University Challenge”.  The judges commented on their fantastic team effort to problem solve and analyse…

On Wednesday 22nd February, a small group of us participated in the Maths Challenge at St Olaves School.  Myself (Daniel Haughey), Alfie Barnes, Evie Brett and Imogen Edmundson made up the team representing Darrick Wood School. With over 30 schools competing, the day was packed with brain teasing challenges, including a mathematical crossword and a relay! Reading University Visits Darrick Wood School

The Chemistry students in Year 12 and Year 13 had the opportunity to use some very special equipment today when former Darrick Wood teacher, Mrs Nuttall, returned in her new role as an outreach coordinator for Reading University. Working in conjunction with the Royal Society of Chemistry Mrs Nuttall brought along £15 000 worth of Infra Red spectrometer, a device used by chemists to analyse and identify unknown chemicals; something students don’t usually see until they go to university themselves….
