This year’s Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge produced some superb public speaking from Darrick Wood’s Year 9 and Year 10 pupils. Every year Darrick Wood School participates in the scheme, which aims to instil in pupils the skills, confidence and desire to speak in public through workshops run by the Speakers Trust and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Particle Physics Masterclass

Six Year 12 and 13 students from Darrick Wood attended the Particle Physics Masterclass at University College London. They were treated to a crash course in fundamental particles and then had to use this knowledge to analyse data from the Atlas detector. The group then had an excellent lecture on Dark Matter which detailed some current research in the race to discover what it is. The students then continued to analyse track data from the detector. Year 12 Geographers Investigate Dorset

Year 12 Geography students recently visited Dorset for a four-day fieldwork trip. On the first day, they visited the town of Boscombe, where they completed fieldwork judging the success of rebranding. They also investigated the need for further regeneration in the town centre. On the second day, the students visited the town of Lyme Regis, where they examined how local, organic food, celebrity chefs and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site had been used to attract visitors to the area….

Our Year 10 Work Experience Programme takes place this year on Monday 11th – Friday 15th July 2016. Pupils are asked to find their own work placements with employers. We support pupils by giving them advice and guidance on finding a placement. This month, the Darrick Wood Youth Travel Ambassadors pitched to a Bromley panel in order to secure funding for their walk to school campaign. The Darrick Wood team completed a group presentation, which outlined their plans and produced a budget on how much the carefully thought-out ideas would cost.
