Chemistry and the Royal Society at Darrick Wood School

Chemistry students at Darrick Wood School Orpington are the proud recipients of extra resources to support their study of A Level Chemistry thanks to a generous grant from The Royal Society of Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry have been incredibly supportive and the additional resources they have provided will enable students, many of whom harbour ambitions to become chemical engineers, biochemists and medical doctors, to work more independently and enhance their understanding of Chemistry.

In a year which sees the introduction of new GCSEs and a new grading system in English and Mathematics, Darrick Wood School pupils and staff rose to the challenge and maintained the high standards we have come to expect. It has been another excellent year for A levels at Darrick Wood School. Overall, 48% of grades were A*-B and 22% A*-A. In 15 subjects over 50% of grades were A*-B. There were some fabulous individual performances and the vast majority of students have achieved their first choice university. Congratulations in particular to Amy Tomkins who will read French and Spanish at Oxford. This year’s Gifted and Talented Evening encompassed a wider range of gifts and talents than ever before. Those who attended were able to start by looking round the Art exhibition with its wide variety of excellent work on show with an amazing range of styles. Gifted and Talented visit Greenwich University

Nine Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from Darrick Wood School attended the Bromley Gifted and Talented Science and Technology day at the University of Greenwich. Working in pairs as part of teams of four with pupils from schools throughout the Borough the pupils took on a set of challenges.  These included E-fit profiling, programming robots, dragster races and a medical challenge. Following our athletics success in recent years at a local level, Darrick Wood School we successfully entered into the English Schools Track and Field Cup for the first time this year. Vaughan performs in Kent County under 14 lawn tennis team

Vaughan Watson from Year 8, a member of the Kent County under 14 lawn tennis team, recently competed in an inter county tennis competition. Kent placed third overall out of 8 counties. A fine achievement by the county and an excellent performance by Vaughan, who won a bronze medal with Kent.
