Parent Bulletin 07/07/23
New Year 7 students
On Wednesday, 5th July we welcomed parents of our new Year 7 students starting at Darrick Wood in September. We shared as much information as possible about the School to help support a successful transition to secondary school. The day before we were delighted to see so the children themselves and encouraged them to enjoy their last two weeks of primary school but to look forward with excitement about the opportunities we offer them in September.
Carnegie Shadowing Group
Over the past three months the DWS Carnegie Shadowing Group have been busy reading the seven short listed titles prior to the announcement of the Carnegie Medal on 21st June. On Wednesday, 28th June, twenty-six participants came together in the Reading Realm to vote for their favourite book, produce some wonderfully creative displays inspired by their reading and to find out which book won the Carnegie Medal. As usual, we were all surprised by winner (‘The Blue Book of Nebo’ by Manon Steffan) especially since it came second to last in our vote! It was a joy to present fifteen Bronze and seven Silver Reading Champion Awards to students as a result of their participation. We are so proud of the students for their achievement and are confident they will continue to inspire others with their love of reading.
Art trip to the Tate Modern
On Monday, 3rd July Mr Radford and Mrs Cox took the Year 12 Art students on a trip to the Tate Modern. The students found it very useful to help them find new artists to develop their personal projects and they were inspired by all the amazing artwork on display.

Dance Production
On Tuesday, 4th July students from all year groups performed our annual dance production this time entitled, The Brits. This was a celebration of Britain using British musicians, artists, writers, historic events as inspiration for our dances. The evening was the perfect opportunity to showcase to parents and friends the work our students have been doing in Dance within lessons and extra-curricular clubs. The performances really did highlight the fantastic talent we have here at Darrick Wood School.

Subject Ambassadors
As part of our plans to enhance our personal development curriculum we have been advertising to students the role of subject ambassador. This has been offered to students in Years 7-10 in all subject areas. Those chosen for the position will be informed by the end of term.

The Subject Ambassadors will be the face each subject and will help with lots of activities within it, working closely with staff and the Head of Department. They will receive badges in September in a presentation assembly.
Bromley Holiday Activities and Food Programme
Your attention is drawn to the following programme of activities available during the summer holidays for children over the age of 8 who are in receipt of free school meals.
Sixth Form
Year 12 students participated brilliantly in the London Treasure Hunt on Wednesday. The whole year group embraced the competitive challenge to explore different parts of London and collect as many photos of iconic places in London. The year group really enjoyed their day, and despite the patches of rain, all went home very tired.
We are incredibly proud to announce that Shannon Goode has worked with other peers to publish the book below which focuses on Healing, Empowerment and Resilience. Her chapter on her experience explores her resilience. Copies of the book are available to view in the Sixth Form Centre.

End of term arrangements
Please note that there will be an earlier finish on the last day of term. Year 12 students will finish at 12.20 (end of lesson 3). Years 7-10 will move to their Form Rooms. They will remain with their Form Tutors ensuring the rooms are tidy and cleared. They will then be dismissed by the pastoral leaders from 12.30pm onwards. Lanyards must be returned to Form Tutors on this day.
