This week This week Zachary from Year 10 played a lively and fun piece on the piano at the start of our main assembly.  It was a lovely way to start each morning and we were all very impressed. The theme of this week’s assembly was a very important one entitled “Freedom from Injustice” and largely focusing on the struggle for equality over time by various groups who have faced discrimination throughout history. The work of our school’s Equality, Diversity…

Assembly round-upLast week’s assemblies started with a performance from students from our Deaf centre. Their version of ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman was truly amazing. Thank you to Maryam, Evie-May, Asma and Stanley. The assembly’s theme was Money Matters. Students were given a quick history of money and how its value changes over time. They then considered the evidence of how qualifications lead to better access to higher paid employment and finally, we evaluated our own personal attitude…

This week Assemblies started with a performance from the Jazz Band. They were brilliant. We then focused on this week’s theme of People are Different. This theme allowed everyone to consider how when we look at things (e.g. a painting) people can notice different things, even though they are looking at the same thing. We also spoke about the whole world coming together for the Olympics and Paralympics this summer and how the different sports required different skills. We concluded…

This week Assemblies this week started with a presentation by Isabella, Isobel, Rosalind, Hannah and Lizzie who all went on the recent Netball Tour. They shared their review of the Tour and encouraged others to go on the Tour next year.  They all spoke with clarity and were excellent ambassadors for school sport. As mentioned in previous bulletins, we encourage students to participate in many ways in assemblies either through performance or through a presentation. Last week’s singing by Piper,…

This week Assemblies in this first week of the summer term were themed around life being a journey. Life can be more enriching and enjoyable when we challenge ourselves do different things. We looked at the extreme challenges overcome by Jasmin Paris (first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons in USA) and Russ Cook, who recently completed a run from the south of Africa to the north (10,000miles!). These were very inspiring, but our adventures through life do not need…

This week This week we celebrated British Science Week. The theme this year is smashing stereotypes. Science is such a varied sector and much more than the societal stereotype of someone in a lab coat and goggles, swirling a conical flask. In the main school assembly we highlighted the importance of science for every one of us. To complement this, students were encouraged to read some of the ‘smashing stereotypes’ stories here: Smashing Stereotypes: The profiles – British Science Week….

This week We are very grateful to Alex and Annie who spoke with clarity and confidence on behalf of the Sports Council at the start of assemblies this week. Extra-curricular sport is going from strength to strength at Darrick Wood School and members of the Sports Council have been responsible, with staff, in raising its profile and promoting the benefits of being involved in school sport. Assemblies all week focused on books and reading, culminating in Thursday’s World Book Day….

Book Fair Success – March 2024

A big thank you to everyone who visited and enjoyed the Book Fair this week! It was another huge success as students spent a total of £1253.81 and raised £689.60 for the school to spend on new books. On Friday last week, the Book Fair coincided with Culture Week and students in the Reading Realm shared beloved stories and books from different cultures, which was lovely to see. We are proud to see the strong passion for reading in our…
