Pupils from across all the Forms sang their hearts out and entertained us with traditional folk songs. Their singing was accompanied by professional melodeon and fiddle player, Will Allen. After the interval, Will spoke about his love of the folk tradition in the UK and provided us with some amazing examples of his own music. There were many memorable moments, but in particular the whole hall joining in clapping and stamping their feet along to Will’s music will stay etched in the memory as well as all of Year 7 singing ‘All Around my Hat’. Feedback from parents at the end and in the days since has been overwhelmingly positive. Our thanks go to the Music Department and of course all of Year 7 for working so hard to sing so well.

Assemblies this week were led by members of the RS Department and considered many aspects of the festive period. They all encouraged reflection on how to do things for others that do not cost much but make a big difference. A great example of that is our food bank collection. Details are provided below:

Today the Head Teacher visited the Environmental Green Group (EGG) which meets Friday lunchtimes to consider environmental matters in particular in relation to the School. They were busy looking at ways to up-cycle plastic bottles. We have a long way to go as a school before we can claim to have reduced our impact on the environment as far as we can, but it is groups like this that will enable this to happen in time.

On Thursday we held a mock election, led by some of our Senior Prefects and Sixth Form students, the results of which are shown below. More importantly than the results, it was great to see so many of our students practising taking part in the democratic process and it helps reinforce how lucky we are to live in a country where this process exists.

It is unlikely anyone would consider that a traditional Christmas jumper would go well with our distinct brown and yellow uniform. However, it was fantastic to see so many pupils in Years 7 to 11 supporting our efforts to raise money for Save the Children today. Sixth Form and staff of course did not have to try to match to brown and yellow and again it was great that so many of them also supporting this worthy cause. It is always brilliant to see the School come together as a community to do something like this.

Pupils in Key Stage 3 have been taking part in their Santa Runs this week. We hope to bring news on this and how much money they have raised soon.

End of term
arrangements

On the last day of
term we will again be raising money for charity. Forms are currently deciding
which charity. This will be through a non-uniform day. If students do not want
to take part, that is fine, but all are welcome to contribute £1 or more to the
students’ chosen charity. The school day
will be altered as usual at the end of the autumn term. School will start at
the normal time of 8.35am. Students in Years 11 and the Sixth Form will finish
from midday and other year groups will finish from 1pm onwards once their
Achievement Coordinators are happy that their rooms are tidy.

Carol Service

Our annual Carol Service will once again be held at
St. Paul’s Church, Crofton on Tuesday, 17th December at 7.30pm. The PSFA will
be providing mince pies and mulled wine. Our Carol Service is always a
wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit. Our choirs and musicians
provide a high quality mix of carols and other festive pieces whilst our
readers outline the Christmas story. Parents, students and friends of the
School are all very welcome.

Term dates 2020/21

Having published the
decision to once again have a two week half term break in the autumn term,
please find below the full term dates for the next academic year:

Autumn term – Wednesday, 2nd September 2020 to
Friday, 18th December 2020 (half term break 19th October to 30th October)

Wednesday, 2nd
September – Professional Development Day.
