Darrick Wood’s presentation at the annual World Class Schools Symposium was well attended by staff and pupils from other schools with the World Class accolade. There was much interest in our podcasting project and there were plenty of opportunities to share how schools can set this up for themselves.

Apart from our own presentation there was the chance to see other examples of how schools can encourage creativity. Dr Airey worked with other Head Teachers to produce a statement to be sent to the Secretary of State on the importance of creativity in education whilst the others explored all the symposium had to offer. Thomas and Sebastian accepted the challenge to attend a textiles workshop where they were surprised to find themselves creating a waistcoat using copies of the Daily Mail – not something either of them had thought of doing before! Unfortunately we do not yet have a photograph of our presentation being given, but we do have one of the boys’ efforts at the textiles workshop (see below).

DWSaudio and more recently our Youtube channel, Amplified, continue to grow in popularity. We hope all parents/carers have now done their homework and visited the sites, sharing with friends and family.

Sebastian and Thomas quickly assembled this newspaper waistcoat.

Summer Recital

An evening of high quality music was provided by students from across the school on Tuesday. This included excellent pieces by the concert band, a brass ensemble, string orchestra, soloists and choirs. There was even music composed by our own pupils including Winner Takes All, composed and conducted by Jude Neanor in Year 12. It was a fabulous evening and we are grateful to all students and staff for their hard work to make it such a success.

Year 6 induction and parents’ evening

We
welcomed Year 6 on Tuesday and then met with their parents on Wednesday
evening. Both events went very well and we look forward to seeing all of the
new Year 7 in September.

Youth Travel Ambassadors

Our
KS3 Youth Travel Ambassadors recently wrote to the Head Teacher to share what
they have been working on over the past few months when completing the
Challenge Programme with Miss Cox and their Transport for London mentor Isobel
Lee. This required them to select a focus from Safe Travel, Active Travel and
The Passenger Experience. They chose Safe Travel.

Their
campaign consisted of presenting an assembly to the whole of Year 7 with a key
message of ‘How aware are you, when you cross the road?’

Wanting
an interactive campaign they organised an obstacle course at lunchtime. Pupils
had to navigate around a variety of obstacles whilst typing the fact ‘772 11-16
year olds were killed or injured on London roads in 2017’. The results of the timed obstacle course
proved how distracting devices such as phones can be when walking to school or
anywhere. On average, it took pupils 3 to 4 times longer trying to complete the
course whilst ‘texting’.

All
9 YTAs attended the YTA Expo at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden
with Miss Cox and Mr Addien. They completed a number of tasks that were
educational whilst having fun. They met pupils from other schools who shared
their campaigns in their schools. Our YTAs hope to continue their excellent
work next year focusing on Active Travel or The Passenger Experience. They
might then take a leadership award and expand the team to include even more
year groups. Our YTAs this year have included Katie Blair, Eeshan Pattanshetty,
Zakir Mubarak, Joella Binns, Ruby Hancock, George Eggleton, Alyssa Duffield,
Shreya Garg and Tulsi Manns. Well done to all of them for having such an
impact.

Online homework

Many parents have asked why we do not set homework online like many other schools. We have listened and are currently testing a platform to do just that. From September all homework will be set in this way. This has the benefit of ensuring that parents can see what has been set so they can provide advice where necessary. Work set can be described in more detail and files attached. We will send more information once the system is tested and ready.

Dates for the diary

Wednesday, 10th July 7.00pm – Sports Awards Evening.

Monday, 15th July 7.00pm – Dance Production.

Monday, 15th July to Friday, 19th July – students and staff from Nanya School, China visiting Darrick Wood.

Tuesday, 16th July – Sports Day at Norman Park for Years 7, 8 and 9.

Friday, 19th July –
last day of term.
