It was excellent to see the students letting off steam and celebrating in style. They were a credit to their AC, Mr Rees, who has worked so hard with Mr Hammond (AAC), Miss Filer (Assistant Head Teacher) and a dedicated team of tutors to support them over the years and to ensure that the Prom was a success.&nbsp; \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examinations continue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nWith GCSEs and A level examinations completed, Year 12 will now be sitting internal examinations to assess their learning over the past academic year. With A levels now examined only after the completion of the full course in Year 13, this is an opportunity for Year 12 to see where they are at and ensure they know exactly what to do when they return after the summer. They then begin two weeks of work experience and we wish them well with this.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G&amp;T Showcase Event<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday we held\nour annual Gifted and Talented Showcase event. This allows us to celebrate the\nvaried talents and achievements of our students across a wide range of subjects\nand extra-curricular areas. Part 1 included a dance piece entitled Skyscraper\nby four very talented Year 7 pupils (Rebecca, Sophie, Amelie and Rebekah). We\nthen heard Hannah&#8217;s entry to a competition held by Gonville and Caius College,\nCambridge as she shared what she knows about the fascinating world of quantum\nbiology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freya, Nerin and Zak\nshared three examples of their brilliant creative writing arranged by Miss Vos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imogen spoke to us\nabout gender inequality. This was a speech she gave which was awarded third\nplace in the Jack Petchey Bromley Speak Out Competition earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis and Harrison,\nwho have both just completed A level Government and Politics, shared their\nalternative political visions for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the interval\nwe were able to view examples of our school student magazine, the Woodpecker.\nThere were displays of Art and Textiles, Year 12 students Melissa and Hannah\nshowed the results of their Geography fieldwork from Dorset and there was the chance\nto see what the students get up to at the Rough Science Club. Year 12\nPsychology students were available to challenge us and to discuss why they find\nthis subject so fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/news.darrickwood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1A4378-6-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.darrickwood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1A4378-6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.darrickwood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1A4378-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.darrickwood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1A4378-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.darrickwood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1A4378-6-405x270.jpg 405w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Three enthusiastic Geographers enjoy discussing the Year 12 Dorset coursework<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>In Part 2 we had the\npleasure of watching Hannah&#8217;s short film, &#8216;The Days of the Week&#8217; and then\nlistened to members of the Brilliant Club speak about they successfully engaged\nin a national programme that aims to support places at top universities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ella and Grace from\nYear 10 danced brilliantly to themes of &#8216;Gravity&#8217; and &#8216;When the War is Over&#8217;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening ended\nexamples from our fantastic audio blog, arranged by Mr Chappell but most\ncertainly the stars being the students who have been involved over the last two\nyears. This even included a sneak preview of their planned serial drama to be\nset in a fictional comprehensive school.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Year 12 Work Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Year 12 will be out\nof school on work experience from Monday, 1st \u2013 Friday, 12th July. All\nplacements requested by the deadlines have now been approved. Students with\napproved placements have received information packs and work experience diaries\nwhich they must complete during their time on work experience. If your\nson\/daughter is attending a work experience placement, it is important that the\nelectronic final consent form is completed. The link has been sent in a\nprevious email to all parents\/carers of students attending an approved work\nexperience placement. Please ensure that you complete the consent form as soon\nas possible. If the form is not returned, students will be unable to attend\ntheir placements. Thank you to those who have submitted the form already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning, during\nassembly, Mrs Collier presented a Health and Safety presentation as well as\nhighlighting important information for students attending work experience\nplacements. During the two week period, students will be visited by members of\nstaff at their work experience placements. Where this is not possible, staff\nwill telephone placements to speak with the student and supervisor. During the\nwork experience period, any feedback or issues should be directed to Mrs\nCollier during normal school hours and on 07810 754 831 outside of these hours.\nPlease inform Mrs Collier immediately of any changes regarding your\nson\/daughter\u2019s work experience placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When students return\nfrom work experience, they will participate in debriefing activities to reflect\non their time spent at their placements. We look forward to hearing about their\nencounters in the world of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your son\/daughter\nhas not secured a work experience placement during the work experience period,\nthey will be expected in school as normal. If your son\/daughter has not secured\na work experience placement for some of the work experience period, they should\nattend school as normal on days when they are not attending their work\nexperience placement (with the exception of students participating in the Duke\nof Edinburgh&#8217;s Gold Award). When attending school, your son\/daughter should\nsign in with Mrs Healy in the Sixth Form Centre at 8.35am each day and can sign\nout at 1.15pm.&nbsp;Your son\/daughter will be directed to an available space to\nstudy during these times.
