Despite the ungodly 4am start, both staff and students were in good spirits as our coach trundled on to the 6.55 Dover to Calais crossing. The weather was dry and fine and allowed even faint-hearted souls to enjoy the Channel views from the deck.

Our journey through the Low Countries passed without incident (unless you count having to pay to visit the toilet in the Belgian service station) and by the afternoon we were in the outskirts of Cologne, getting ready to drag suitcases into the hostel reception. Our party gamely feasted on the Friday night fish that the hostel had on offer as the evening meal and we then repaired to our first stop; the Hafenmarkt. Surrounded by the twinkling Christmas lights, the nautically-themed market stalls and the live music, our Year 11 students soon got into the festive spirit. A few hours later, however, we were tucked up in bed ready for a long day ahead of us on the Saturday.

As we headed out into Cologne in the daylight, we could see the city centre decorations near the Old Town. We passed these by to head to the just-opening Schildergasse, Cologne’s premier shopping street. A few hours later, we moved to the cathedral square, in the shadow of the ever impressive, Kölner Dom, Germany’s most visited tourist attraction. A number of our more stout-hearted students scaled the tower in order to gain breathtaking views of the city. After some more retail therapy in the already bustling Christmas Markt am Kölner Dom, we headed to our next stop.

Our next port of call on the itinerary was the Schokoladenmuseum (chocolate museum). As students made their way through the manufacturing rooms of the exhibition, some managed to accrue quite substantial free gifts of freshly-made chocolates…..others less so. Wie schade!

Right next door to the Schokoladenmuseum is the Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum where visitors are treated to the story of sport and games from prehistory to the present day. This is an interactive space and very soon our students were jumping, stretching, boxing and lifting. Many of our party made their way to the roof of this re-purposed wharf building to play football. Even the physically improbable prospect of Mr Wright playing football came to pass as two matches took place on these pitches, picturesquely situated next to the Rhine and with a view of the cathedral and the Ferris wheel of the harbour market.

Saturday night’s trip into the city was to the Heinzels Wintermärchen market which is located between Alter Markt and Heumarkt. The Heinzelmännchen are mythical creatures, not unlike gnomes, and all of the theming of this, arguably the most Christmassy of the markets, reflected their presence with signs, cabins and animated decorations. Despite the mild conditions, the organisers even ran to some snow, albeit it artificially generated by machines, which descended from the trees as the night wore on. Again, some of our students proved avid shoppers, finding rare trinkets and gifts for those at home.

The final day of our trip (aside from the journey home) was Wintertraum at Phantasialand. The kinder weather conditions of this year compared to 2022 made the rides less of a test of endurance than they were last year. We also were able to stay a little later and enjoy the nightly Wintertraum illuminations at the park which really do need to be seen to be believed.

All good things come to an end and a slightly drizzlier Monday accompanied our trip home. Again, although I might be considered biased, Germany proved to be an excellent warm-up for the Christmas break. Ein frohes neues Jahr für 2024!

Eco Committee Meeting 3

This week the Eco Reps met for their half-termly meeting. The Eco Committee is now supported by over 40 students across the whole school community who are keen to implement change within our school environment. The focus this term is on ‘litter’. We have invested in 40 litter pickers which are distributed across all the year teams and are used daily. The meeting including students completing a litter pick as we moved around the school site as we looked at the changes to the School Grounds and the increase in biodiversity on the site.
