From the comments received we understand this was an evening that parents really appreciated. We will be sending home copies of the presentation by email early next week.

Assemblies this week have focused on the theme of Forgiveness – how we need to learn to forgive not just others, but also ourselves. We were also lucky to hear from Mr Wright, Head of MFL and two students who gave fabulous presentation on languages spoken at Darrick Wood School. This was initiated because Tuesday was European Day of Languages. The presentation shared that our increasingly diverse school can celebrate the fact that between them, our students can speak 16 European languages and a total of 40 different languages other than English are spoken as a first language by a proportion of our students. We encourage the learning of other languages for as long as possible. Most students take a GCSE in a language and some continue to A level. As Mr Wright shared at the end of the presentation, “Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things” (Flora Lewis).

On Tuesday there was also an event open exclusively to our students in Year 7, so that they could sample the culinary delights of our European neighbours, as well as practise some of their new language skills. They were appropriately excited about the prospect of free food and drink and so the Languages corridor was thronged between 1.30 and 2.00pm with eager visitors availing themselves of croissants and crêpes, Stollen and Hausgemachte Waffeln and bocaditos and palmeritas.

PSFA

The second hand uniform sale was again very popular on Saturday. We aim to hold a sale at least termly. The next one will be early in the spring term.

The PSFA AGM was held on Tuesday. We are very grateful to all committee members and especially Emma McGrath who was standing down as chair. She has made such a difference to the PSFA over the years and last year’s donation to the School was one of the largest ever. New Chair Joanne Cummins and a committed group of parents and staff will work hard over the coming year to try to beat last year’s total. Please volunteer your time to the PSFA, even if it is just an hour or two every now again (e.g. helping at school events, uniform sales etc). All students in the School benefit from the funds raised.

One of the easiest ways you can support the PSFA fundraising efforts is by signing up to My School Lottery. The great thing about this is, not only will you be doing a very good deed to support us in raising money that directly benefits the children, but you will also be in with a chance of winning weekly cash prizes for yourself and if your ticket matches all 6 numbers drawn, you will win the jackpot prize of £25,000!

Once you have signed up there is absolutely no effort required.

You can sign up at anytime, but if you sign up now you will also be in with a chance to win tickets to Harry Potter and The Curse Child and tickets to the Warner Bros Studio Studio Tour. Tickets are only £1 per ticket to enter with a guaranteed winner every week. Anyone can buy a ticket, not just parents/carers so please share the below link with as many people as you can because the more people who buy tickets, the more money we raise and the more money you can win!

https://www.yourschoollottery.co.uk/lottery/school/darrick-wood-secondary-school

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Drama

For the second year running, 30 Year 9 students have been able to participate in the Old Vic Schools Club. This programme (consisting of tickets to see four live performances and industry led workshops) is designed to encourage the next generation of theatre-makers through providing young people with an introduction to a broad range of non-performing roles. This week, the students involved took part in a Directing workshop led by industry professionals as well as watching the play ‘Pygmalion’. The students were exceptionally behaved throughout and were a true credit to the school.
