Students were informed of the possible origins of this phrase where in times gone by a horse’s age and therefore value was based on a check of their teeth – it was a reliable source of important information. Students were recommended to always use the most reliable sources when making decisions and judgements, for example making use of scientific research more than rumour and hearsay on the internet. Much has been researched using scientific methodology over recent decades that is transforming teaching and learning in schools. This week’s assemblies highlighted how students can establish the right environment and habits to enable the best studying and therefore success in exams. All of the following are statements based on peer reviewed scientific research:

Students who study in silence receive up to 60% better results than those who listen to music with lyrics whilst studying. Studying whilst listening to music without lyrics is better than with that with lyrics, but the best results come from studying in silence.

Studying with a mobile phone nearby, even if you do not use it, affects concentration whilst studying.

Students that eat breakfast daily are able to focus better than those who skip breakfast. Drinking a sugary drink in place of breakfast is even worse for concentration!

Going for a walk in a natural environment (open spaces, woodland etc) improves the mood, and enables better focus when returning to study.

We were pleased that thanks to a team effort on Wednesday we were able to open the School for all year groups once the snow had been cleared and sufficient staff had managed to reach the School from home. We apologise that the notification about the delayed start only came one hour before the usual start time and that this meant some students had already begun their journey. Those arrived ahead of the delayed start time of 9.45am were able to come into the warm of the Dining Hall and be supervised by pastoral staff.

Year 9 Options Evening was extremely well attended and, from the comments received on the night, parents and their children found the evening very informative and helpful. Students in Year 9 should continue to speak to their teachers about the subjects on offer and all must make sure the make their selections by the deadline of Monday, 27th March.

Safer Internet Day poster competition

Congratulations to the winner in each Year 7 Form and well done to all who took part:

Boswell – Ayla

Fry – Tabitha

Lubbock – Anna

Saunders – Eva W

Willett – George B

Crompton – Ellie L

Darwin – Alyssa

Hill – Nazaha

March – Neve

Pitt – Emily L

DWS Audio

Two our students have recently written and recorded new audio dramas for our DWS Audio blog. This was an incredible effort and a kind gesture to help improve our PE and Sport provision at school. Tyler is one of many Santas featured in the Winter/Spring Orpington 1st Magazine.

Reminder – local roads

Please park with consideration for local residents if you need to drop off or pick up your child from school. Do not block driveways, do not stop on the zig-zags outside the school or use our driveway as somewhere to turn. Ideally, avoid Lovibonds Avenue all together. Three schools on one road does mean it can become very congested, polluted and potentially dangerous if the car becomes the most relied upon mode of transport.

Reminder – uniform

Bags – these should be plain, without large logos, and large enough to fit an A4 folder in. Kicker shoes are allowed.

Jewellery – this is not allowed, except for a wrist watch. One plain stud is also allowed in each ear lobe.

Make-up – this is not allowed in Years 7-10, including fake tan. In Year 11, only a subtle amount of make-up is allowed.

Hair – no outlandish styles, dyed hair must not be an unusual colour (i.e. natural shades only).

We are grateful to parents/carers for their ongoing support in our mission to set the highest standards of uniform/appearance.

Dates for the diary

Tuesday, 21st March

Year 9 Parents’ Evening

Wednesday, 29th March

Year 8 Parents’ Evening

Monday, 3rd April to Friday, 14th April

EASTER HOLIDAY (return Monday, 17th April)

Thursday, 20th April

Year 7 Parents’ Evening

This week Assemblies this week were based on the well-known saying “From the horse’s mouth”.
