Whilst the real message was that children are priceless to their parents, students were asked to appreciate what parents/carers do for them, what they sacrifice and research that indicates it can cost around £200,000 to bring up a child from 0 to 18. Fortunately, education in the UK is free and students were able to reflect on why it is therefore important to make the most of this most ‘valuable’ opportunity.

In an additional assembly today, students in Year 7 met Scamp (Amelia’s Hearing Dog) along with students and staff from the Deaf Centre to celebrate Deaf Awareness Week. The assembly started with some music and showed the following video clip https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=59bSI8tplvUshowing of a man signing to the song This is me from The Greatest Showman.

Sixth Form students, Amelia Price, Ayeh Farjaoui, Kaitlyn Hilson and Olivia Brewster created and delivered an assembly about Deaf Awareness and Hearing Dogs. They also provided tips to help communicate with a deaf person and even promoted two apps to encourage students to learn sign language in their spare time. Theses apps are called ‘Bright BSL’ and ‘Sign BSL’. Mrs Banks, Head of the Deaf Centre, introduced the assembly as well as helped with the PowerPoint and Mr Quesada signed on the stage in assembly. The students did a fantastic job and we are very proud of them. We have currently raised around £600 and hope to add to this. We would like to encourage parents (if they are able to) to donate towards this worth-while charity. Thank you to all the students who today wore an item of blue to promote and support Deaf Awareness Week.

Yesterday, auditions for next year’s production of Oliver were held. More than 50 students auditioned for the ‘named’ parts. Congratulations to all who made the cast list. There were some very difficult decisions to be made. The show could have been cast at least twice with the array of talent that was seen.

We were today delighted to welcome LBB Director of Children’s Services, Richard Baldwin, to the School. After a meeting with the Head Teacher and Chair of Governors, Richard enjoyed a tour of the School, popping into lessons and getting to know our wonderful school. We look forward to welcoming him back again whenever his busy schedule allows.

Parent Pay reminder

Please ensure your child’s Parent Pay food account is in credit, especially once the low balance alert comes through.

Year 8 into Year 9 languages

Students in Year 8 now have the opportunity to choose which modern foreign language they would prefer to continue to study from Year 9 (September 2022) onwards. The majority have studied two languages this year and can choose to continue one of these languages to GCSE level. Parents/carers are reminded to complete the online form to confirm their child’s preference by Friday, 13th May, using the link in our recent letter. If your child’s preference is not received, we will allocate your child to one of the modern foreign languages that they have studied in Year 8, with priority for the language they have studied since Year 7.

Dates for the diary

Tuesday, 10th May – PSFA Meeting at school, 7pm

Thursday, 12th May – Sayers Croft Year 8 parents’ meeting – 6pm

Monday, 16th May – Public examinations start

Monday, 30th May to Friday, 3rd June – Half term

Monday, 13th June to Friday, 17th June – Years 7-9 assessments

Friday, 22nd July – End of term

Thursday, 18th August – A level results day

Thursday, 25th August – GCSE results day

Wednesday, 31st August – Start of term (PD Day – staff only)

Thursday, 1st September – Years 7 and 12 start

Friday, 2nd September – All students return

This week Assemblies this week focused on a theme that many parents/carers might relate to – money and the cost of bringing up a child.
