Welcome back We look forward to welcoming all of our students and staff back after the Easter Holiday. We hope everyone had an enjoyable break and all are ready for what will be a busy but highly successful summer term. This parent bulletin largely rounds off final items of news from last term and also provides some reminders and key dates coming up. This week This week we celebrated British Science Week. The theme this year is smashing stereotypes. Science is such a varied sector and much more than the societal stereotype of someone in a lab coat and goggles, swirling a conical flask. In the main school assembly we highlighted the importance of science for every one of us. To complement this, students were encouraged to read some of the ‘smashing stereotypes’ stories here: Smashing Stereotypes: The profiles – British Science Week….

This week We are very grateful to Alex and Annie who spoke with clarity and confidence on behalf of the Sports Council at the start of assemblies this week. Extra-curricular sport is going from strength to strength at Darrick Wood School and members of the Sports Council have been responsible, with staff, in raising its profile and promoting the benefits of being involved in school sport. Assemblies all week focused on books and reading, culminating in Thursday’s World Book Day….

Book Fair Success – March 2024

Book Fair Success – March 2024

A big thank you to everyone who visited and enjoyed the Book Fair this week! It was another huge success as students spent a total of £1253.81 and raised £689.60 for the school to spend on new books. On Friday last week, the Book Fair coincided with Culture Week and students in the Reading Realm shared beloved stories and books from different cultures, which was lovely to see. We are proud to see the strong passion for reading in our…

Assemblies Last week we were treated to a wonderful performance by Khloe on the piano. This week, Culture Week assemblies were launched by a fantastic performance of the Samba Club, led by Head of Music, Mr Rees. Mr Guest, Head of History and Politics, was then joined by students from the EDI Society to explain the reasons why the students had asked for a Culture Week. Events through the week were promoted with a view that all students would appreciate…

Welcome back We hope everyone had an enjoyable half-term break. Year 11 came back to face their pre-public examinations in many of their subjects, their final mocks before their GCSE this summer. They have worked hard and will appreciate a break this weekend. As we move into the second half of this term, there is a buzz about school with so much going on as illustrated in the items in this week’s bulletin. There has been a big increase in…

Latest news Last week’s assemblies started with a fascinating account from Marcus and Shubhan of the Year 11 trip before Christmas to Cologne, Germany. The long journey was more than made up for by what Cologne had to offer and they ensured we all wished we had had the chance to go. In an assembly led predominantly by students, we then heard from some of our amazing eco representatives across all year groups – Aerin, Chelsea, Shreya, Scott, Shubhan, Olivia,…

This week With the focus in this week’s assemblies on freedom, we were delighted to hear from Sixth Form students Roshni and George talk about Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the USA. MLK Day is a public holiday, or better expressed as a national day of service where volunteering and helping others is encouraged. The assembly moved on to the democratic process, that there are over 50 national elections across the world…

This week Assemblies this week have focused on what it means to be a neighbour and in particular a good neighbour. Students also reflected on how technology is changing what we mean by neighbour and bringing people closer together virtually. The example was shared of how the Duolingo app is being used by millions of people worldwide to learn languages and how, by learning another language, we can then develop closer links with others that we might not otherwise have…

This week A Happy New Year to our whole school community. Whilst the relatively early return to school straight after New Year’s Day was probably a shock to us all, it was great to see our students and staff again on Tuesday. The Head Teacher wrote on Thursday about the challenges we faced in moving to a new catering company. Feeding the majority of the School’s 1700 students in 40 minutes at lunch time has never been an easy task…
