This week This week we celebrated British Science Week. The theme this year is smashing stereotypes. Science is such a varied sector and much more than the societal stereotype of someone in a lab coat and goggles, swirling a conical flask. In the main school assembly we highlighted the importance of science for every one of us. This week We are very grateful to Alex and Annie who spoke with clarity and confidence on behalf of the Sports Council at the start of assemblies this week. Extra-curricular sport is going from strength to strength at Darrick Wood School and members of the Sports Council have been responsible, with staff, in raising its profile and promoting the benefits of being involved in school sport. A big thank you to everyone who visited and enjoyed the Book Fair this week! It was another huge success as students spent a total of £1253.81 and raised £689.60 for the school to spend on new books. Latest news Last week’s assemblies started with a fascinating account from Marcus and Shubhan of the Year 11 trip before Christmas to Cologne, Germany. This week With the focus in this week’s assemblies on freedom, we were delighted to hear from Sixth Form students Roshni and George talk about Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the USA. MLK Day is a public holiday, or better expressed as a national day of service where volunteering and helping others is encouraged. This week Assemblies this week have focused on what it means to be a neighbour and in particular a good neighbour. Students also reflected on how technology is changing what we mean by neighbour and bringing people closer together virtually. This week A Happy New Year to our whole school community. Whilst the relatively early return to school straight after New Year’s Day was probably a shock to us all, it was great to see our students and staff again on Tuesday.
